Satan's Slob in Salem

Question:

Oh dear. — Lush Lush-O-Mint: Double Yer Pleasure, Double Yer Fun

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – http://www.ecnnews.com/cgi-bin/s/thestoryv2.pl?slug-SATANISM   The devil you know? Salem Satanist   dispels myths — at least some of them   By BEN CASSELMAN   Correspondent   SALEM — Ignore the altar in the corner, and John Allee’s small   First Street apartment has little out of the ordinary. A potted   plant hangs from the ceiling, an imitation Oriental carpet covers   the floor, a copy of Life Extension magazine sits on the table   next to a large reclining armchair.   And then there is the altar. Candles and a wooden skull sit atop   a black tablecloth. An upside-down pentacle hangs on the wall,   like a cross in a church. It is an altar to Satan.   Known as Lord Egan to his followers — and Allee claims he   has many — Allee is the high priest of the First Church of   Satan, a six-year-old organization that he runs out of his   apartment.   Salem might seem the obvious choice for a "religion" like this,   but even in a city known for witches and the occult, Satanism   — and Lord Egan — stand out.   Indeed, as he sits on his couch stroking Sam, one of his three   cats, the pendant around his neck the only suggestion of his   unconventional beliefs, it is hard not to wonder whether Allee   is entirely serious.   He is.   Satanists, Allee says, do not really worship the devil or practice   evil. They believe in the balance of forces; the Satanism he   describes is more akin to Eastern religions such as Buddhism   and Taoism than it is to Christianity in reverse. At times, Allee   seems more like a philosopher than a religious leader.   "We believe that good and evil are two forces that define one   another and complement one another and complete one   another," Allee said. "Good and evil do not exist, but the   perception of good and evil does exist."   The line is paraphrased from Nietszche, the turn-of-the-century   German philosopher famous for declaring that "God is dead,"   and the man Allee credits with being the first modern Satanist.   Freedom and magic   Allee said Satanists disagree on whether Satan is a physical   being, but they agree that both good and evil exist within   everyone. Satanism, he said, is a religion of personal   sovereignty, and its tenets sound much like libertarianism:   People should be free to do whatever they want, so long as it   does not harm others.   "Every man and every woman is the god of his or her own   life," he said. "No matter how right I may be in believing the   way I do, you have an equal right to believe in what you   believe in."   Such claims may be a break from Christianity, Judaism, or   Islam, but they are hardly uncommon. Chris Parker, an   18-year-old member of the church’s high council, said he often   meets people who agree with Satanism’s philosophy who   would never think to call themselves Satanists.   But these are not merely secular humanists in black robes.   Allee believes in magic, and unlike those in Salem’s prominent   Wiccan community, he does not limit himself to "white" magic,   a distinction he said only reinforces the artificial divide between   good and evil.   The First Church of Satan Web site includes instructions for   curses and for rituals such as satanic weddings and a   "recrucifixion," a satanic mass that includes a prayer beginning   "Our father, who art in hell," and the ritual nailing of a clay   figure to a cross in order to "cleanse" participants of   Christianity’s influence.   Disturbing views   Allee says the rites are optional, and members may pick and   choose as they wish. But the ceremonies are not the only part   of Satanism that outsiders might find disturbing.   "We’re for all seven deadly sins," Allee said.   Allee also believes animal sacrifice should be legal, though he   says he does not practice it himself; that drugs should be   legalized, though he says he does not use them; and that age of   consent laws for sexual activity — 16 in Massachusetts —   should be revoked, though he does not advocate violating them   while they remain on the books.   "Many people bemoan the fact that puberty occurs so young,"   Egan writes on the church’s Web site. "As a Satanist, I am here   to tell you that nature doesn’t make mistakes, people do. …   When a child reaches puberty, which is the age of sexual   consent, you have no right to determine who their sexual   partners will or won’t be."   Allee, a 51-year-old Chelsea native, served briefly in the   military, but was invited to leave (with an honorable discharge)   when his satanic views were discovered. He does not work full   time, but helps to manage a Web site for his brother.   Gathering of 20   Despite his unorthodox beliefs, Allee has a significant   following. Members of the First Church of Satan do not meet   regularly in person, and Allee expects an upcoming gathering   to draw only about 20 people. But the church’s online chat   group has nearly 500 active members, and Allee has sent out   hundreds of $35 membership kits, complete with certificate of   membership and pentacle amulet.   The movement as a whole is even larger; Allee founded his   church six years ago after splitting from the Church of Satan,   and an Internet search yields Web sites for the First Satanic   Church, the Church of Lucifer, the Devil’s Church, the Satanic   Council and even a McSatan’s.   Allee plans to reach out to new members with a cable access   show, complete with puppets, and he already broadcasts a free   radio show online. He has also released a compact disc, "Dark   Passion," with such songs as "Route 66," Rodgers and   Hammerstein’s "It Might As Well Be Spring," and "That Old   Black Magic."   If the image of a satanic high priest singing show tunes in his   high-rise apartment seems comical, Allee said he is working   toward a day when it does not. He says he wants to make   Satanism a mainstream alternative religion.   He still has a long way to go. Rebellious teen-agers still make   up much of Satanism’s ranks, and Satanists frequent Internet   chat rooms more than physical chapels. Infighting among   different Satanist groups is rampant, and even Allee said that   "half of the people I call Satanists I just don’t care for."   But Allee said his commitment to free speech and   self-sovereignty will draw people to his church.   "I want to see us set an example so the others will follow,"   Allee said. "I’m going to do everything to enhance our image." End of article To give you a piece of my mind, I have spoken to Lord Egan by telephone and although I don’t agree with some of his beliefs and ethics, he is a very pleasant person and very informative. From having spoken to him, he does not consider any of his practices to resemble any form of Christianity. He certainly doesn’t give the impression of being an unstable person in comparison to many who post in alt.religion wicca or alt.pagan, furthermore, I don’t see him posting here in this newsgroup lately in the past year. That article obviously that you posted was not written by you and you have the nerve to post anonymously and judge a man who you most likely have never met, much less communicated with on line. At least Lord Egan has a following for what he believes in which is a lot more than what I can say for you who hides behind an anonymous username. Lord Egan has every right to reside where ever he chooses to reside and that is none of your business. If anybody is a slob, you are!

The difference between you and me is that I have spoken to Lord Egan by telephone when somebody had posted his complete mailing address and telephone number in the newsgroup. I informed him of the post. It is very doubtful that you have ever spoken to him or communicated with him on line. On the contrary, I have been reading several posts by Raven Blackbane and Malphus which contained a lot of vulgarity and details of their abuse of animals in some of their posts. I find their posts be indicative of mentally disturbed people in comparison to Lord Egan. Furthermore, I don’t see Lord Egan posting in this forum, much less a reply to this subject thread in alt.religion wicca. Lord Egan is a lot more approachable and personable than most of the people I have seen posting here in alt.religion wicca. I am not going to change my opinion of Lord Egan, so you can stop wasting your time calling me a hypocrite. I prefer conversing with him than people like you. Ps. Your quote describes you quite well.

"I’m going to do everything to enhance our image." End of article

To give you a piece of my mind, I have spoken to Lord Egan by telephone and although I don’t agree with some of his beliefs and ethics, he is a very pleasant person and very informative.

"I’m going to do everything to enhance our image." End of article
